Reserve System Procedures
What may be placed on Course Reserve
The Library will place books, bound periodicals, current periodical
issues, and audiovisual materials that it owns on reserve for courses
at the request of the faculty.
The Library will also accept personal copies of books and photocopies
of journal articles for reserve. Please note that personal copies
of materials are marked and tagged for our circulation system and
undergo heavy use. The Library cannot be responsible for personal
copies placed on reserve that become damaged or missing.
Photocopies of journal articles to be placed on course reserve
must be in compliance with the Copyright Law of the United States.
Please read the description of Copyright
Law as it applies to course reserves.
How to place materials on Course Reserve
"Faculty Reserve Request" forms are available at the Circulation
Desk in the Library or may be completed online.
Please fill in the form and return it to the Circulation Desk. Each
item you place on course reserve, whether owned by the Library or
not, must appear on the Reserve Request Form.
The Library will use this list to enter information into our automated
system. It is important that your reading assignments use the same
bibliographic information you gave on the form, so students will
be able to request the required readings under the appropriate title.
We are always glad to have copies of course bibliographies and to
make them available to students. It will help the students if items
on reserve are clearly marked on these bibliographies.
Reserve materials generally circulate for one hour and may be checked
out of the Library one hour before closing for overnight use. Video
materials generally circulate for 4 hours.
Timing for placing materials on Course Reserve
If you would like for the Library to retrieve materials from the
shelves, we must have your Reserve Request Form in hand two weeks
before the materials are to be placed on reserve. The Library does
not have enough staff to make copies of articles; photocopies are
the responsibility of the faculty member placing them on course
reserve.
The Library cannot promise that course reserve materials will be
available for student use unless we have time to process materials.
Please allow the Library at least 24 hours to process materials
before students are notified that the items should be on reserve.
At the end of the term
All materials will be removed from reserve at the end of each term.
Personal copies and photocopies will be returned to faculty at that
time.
If you intend to use materials for more than one consecutive term,
please note that information on the Reserve Request Form. If you
intend to use photocopies for more than one term, please attach
a copy of your copyright permission.
