Guidelines for Requesting Library Instruction
Library instruction at Hanover College is integrated with course content to provide assistance with specific assignments and to develop information literacy skills. Numerous instructional options are available, and when requested, the librarian can help tailor assignments to work with library resources. Above all, communication between professor and librarian ensures information needs and curricular goals will be met. Please take a few moments to look over the following points regarding library instruction.
Library faculty need time to prepare exercises, handouts, and to communicate with professors, therefore a minimum of two weeks notice is required to schedule a session.
Please note that the purpose of the reference desk librarian is to help individuals and not for last minute group instruction. You are of course welcome to bring your class to the library as a group, but we will be able to provide better service with advanced notice. The library lab may only be reserved with permission of Heather Loehr.
Timing is Everything
Students should have a clear understanding of their assignment. Sessions held far in advance of the due date usually lack relevance to students and are not as effective as those scheduled reasonably close to the time students must begin their work.
Your Presence is Requested
We prefer, and it is strongly suggested, that professors accompany their class to the library session as students are more involved and the learning experience enhanced when you attend. Experience shows that attending professors are able to stimulate discussion, highlight points, and add additional information.
To request library instruction notify Heather Loehr (x7170, firstname.lastname@example.org). Please have an alternate date in mind in case your first choice is unavailable. Be willing to forward a copy of the assignment and state expectations, special needs, and particular resources you want to include. To ensure adequate time for preparation, a minimum of two weeks notice is required when requesting a session.
Individualized Faculty Instruction
In addition to our services helping your students, librarians are also available for individualized consultations with faculty for topics such as help using a particular database, plagiarism detection, developing alternative assignments, and other questions you may have about library use and resources.
