research help: web searching
Effective Web Searching
The Internet (World Wide Web, WWW, "web") provides access
to a wealth of information across a multitude of subjects. Unlike
a library, however, resources available on the web are not subject
to processes to review them for authenticity or accuracy, so care
must be taken to search the web efficiently and effectively.
The resources on this page are provided to help guide students
toward better, more productive Internet searching. Search guides
and resource lists are provided.
Searching the web is not a substitute for library research
at the college level. Always check with your professor as to whether
web research is allowed for your assignment.

Discipline Specific Web Links
A few notes about these links:
The following suggested links for further exploration of information
and data are provided, not as a replacement, but as a supplement
to traditional/proven library resources like the many proprietary
databases to which we pay a subscription, as well as printed reference
materials that are purchased and considered standards in their field,
books acquired for the general collection by faculty, library periodical
subscriptions, and other materials, such as government documents
that we receive as part of our federal depository status (see our
online catalog).
Since web sites come and go, change addresses, etc., these recommended
lists are not meant to be static but to be updated as necessary.
If you find a link that is broken and no longer works, if you would
like to suggest a different site for consideration, or if you find
a site is no longer useful or relevant in supporting our curriculum,
please let us know.
So that each category list remains manageable, most sites have
been placed in only one subject category though, in reality, many
sites, given their interdisciplinary nature as well as the interdisicplinary
nature of an undergraduate liberal arts program, could be placed
in additional categories. For example, one interested in looking
in the Political Science category may also want to browse the links
in the International Studies category.
Within most subject categories you will find a mix of sites that,
more or less, are "content-rich" with those that simply do a good
job in providing links to other sites (commonly known as meta-sites).
The brief annotations are designed to help in clarifying what a
particular site provides before you click on the hyperlink. CHOICE
Current Reviews for Academic Libraries were instrumental in providing
a basis for many of the annotations. Sites are arranged alphabetically
by site title within each category.
Please note that Hanover College or the Duggan Library cannot be
responsible for any content on external campus servers.
Finally, though these links are meant to make it easier to find
quality, discipline-specific sites, it is recommended that you review
