Click here to submit an Interlibrary Loan request. Please read the information and policies below before submitting your request. Note: due to required materials quarantine for COVID-19, and reductions in courier/mail service, there may be a delay - possibly significant - in receiving books and other physical materials. Please plan accordingly and request as early as possible.
What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a collaboration among libraries to share resources with one another. If the Duggan Library lacks an item that a student, faculty member or staff member needs to use for research, we will try to get it. Most often, we can borrow it from another library. To be able to borrow, we must also lend materials, so ILL also lends Hanover materials to scholars at other institutions.
When is it appropriate to borrow materials by means of Interlibrary Loan?
If the resources needed are not available in the Duggan Library collection, ILL may be appropriate. Both faculty and students are expected to make a thorough check of our own book and periodical holdings before requesting an item on interlibrary loan. ILL is not to be used as a substitute for purchase of frequently needed books or periodicals which ought to be added to our collection, but rather serves as a supplement to meet special needs. ILL materials cannot be placed on Reserve.
What kinds of library materials can be borrowed on Interlibrary Loan?
The Duggan Library will attempt to borrow any requested item, although frequently we have difficulty borrowing the following:
- Reference books
- Rare books or manuscripts
- Books published within the last year (which may be in high demand at the lending library)
What about copyright restrictions on Interlibrary Loan?
The Library absorbs the costs of clearing copyright, so that our users may have the research materials they need.
How long does it take for materials to arrive on Interlibrary Loan?
On average, books and other physical items are processed and received within 10-14 working days (not including weekends or holidays). Articles are usually sent electronically and arive much faster. Difficult items to verify or locate may take longer. You can help us speed up the process by providing as much citation information about your item as possible, so please ask a Reference Librarian if you need help completing your request!
When / Where will the item be due?
Photocopies and electronic copies of articles are yours to keep and will be delivered through campus mail/email, unless you ask for us to hold them for you to pick up.
Books are due a month from the day we receive them. You will be be notified that the item is at the Circulation Desk waiting for you to pick it up within one working day of the day we get it, so it is important for you to pick up materials in a timely fashion.
Can I renew ILL materials?
In many cases, yes, but you need to contact the Library one week before the due date. We will then contact you with renewal information.
Are there any charges / fines?
Interlibrary Loan service is provided free of charge to all Hanover College students, faculty and staff. However, if the Library does not return materials on time, other libraries may hesitate to lend to us again. It is very important that you return materials on time, and failure to do so may result in your losing the privilege to borrow freely through ILL. Overdue charges are $1.00 per day per item. You are responsible for all charges resulting from lost or damaged materials.
How do I make a request?
A request form is available on the Library's web site, or you may fill out a paper ILL request form, available at the Reference desk. Please see a Reference Librarian if you have any questions about making a request.
